A strange new TikTok trends sees people stretching out a wire coat hanger and placing it on around their head like a crown. It’s called the “hanger reflex,” and the wearers claim that once the hanger is placed on their head their head will move involuntarily to either the left or the right. And strangely enough, a 2015 study from researchers in Japan seems to back up the claim. The researchers found that the involuntary movement happens as a result of the wire hanger applying pressure to the unilateral fronto-temporal region of the brain. Researchers wrote, “In 85.4% of the trials, head rotation was observed in the direction that coincided with the side compressed by the hanger. There was no difference in responses between genders. The incident rate of the hanger reflex was remarkably high and most likely represents a prevalent phenomenon in humans.”
