MOUNT UNION – That is one way to start off the Class 2A State baseball playoffs as the Mount Union Trojans took care of business against the Montgomery Red Raiders in five innings by the final score of 13-0 on Monday.

It didn’t take long for the Trojans to get on the board as during the bottom half of the first inning. Julian Weirich led off with a double to left center field before moved over to third by an infield single from Jamon Ranck who then later stole second base. Then the hit came from Dylan Shawver who drove both Weirich and Ranck in with a single to center to make it a 2-0 Mount Union lead.

A couple innings later, the Trojans added on to their lead scoring three runs in the frame. The dynamic duo of Weirich and Ranck struck again as Weirich led off the inning with an infield single before Ranck delivered a titanic shot over the left field fence to extend the lead to 4-0. Levi Hunsinger later scored on a wild pitch, extending their lead to 5-0.

But then in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mount Union offense really took off, scoring eight runs in the frame highlighted by a two RBI double from Cody McClain and a two RBI single from Nasir Collins.

In fact, nearly every single batter in the Mount Union lineup had at least a hit in this game. Weirich and Ranck each went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Davin Yocum to the mound for the Trojans and threw a one hitter through four innings of work which included four strikeouts and two walks on 60 pitches. Cody McClain finished off the fifth and final inning.

Mount Union moves on and has an overall record of (19-5) and will await to see who they will compete against on Thursday.
