MCVEYTOWN – It was a tale of two halves as the McVeytown Eagles defeated the Derry-Decatur Cyclones by the final score of 54-20 in CKFL Midget football Tuesday evening.
The Eagles soared into the endzone first during the opening period as Bentley Felmlee broke loose with a 35 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Colt Bratton later scored on the extra point to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
The Cyclones responded with a big run of their own as running back Drake Finefrock found himself in the endzone with an 11 yard run. Quarterback Nate Charles scored a touchdown pass to complete the two point conversation to make it an 8-7 Decatur lead.
About 30 seconds later McVeytown answered as Blake Specht hustled his way down the field to complete a 38 yard touchdown run and then Bratton completed the two point conversation with a pass to Treyson Yohn to make it a 15-8 lead for the Eagles.
Decatur was marching down the field and was able to move the ball to midfield when they attempted to pass the ball sailed right into the waiting hands of Ace Prough who scored the interception for the McVeytown.
And it the Eagles took advantage of the turnover as Felmlee busted a 45 yard run to extend the lead to 21-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started out as a game of hot potato with both teams struggling to keep possession of the ball. For Decatur, the first fumble recovery was made by Clay Ruble. Only for McVeytown to get the ball right back a few plays later with a fumble recovery by Brayden Hess.
Felmlee struck again and scored a 78 yard touchdown run and extended the Eagles’ lead to 27-8.
But the Cyclones were not going away quietly, and the one that was making some noise was Finefrock who flew across the field and returned the kickoff 68 yards for the score and cut the lead down to 27-14.
Decatur forced another turnover which was recovered by Carson Laub which later set up the 68 yard run into the endzone from Finefrock which made it a 27-14 game.
However, McVeytown managed to get on the board late in the half as Felmlee scored a 14 yard touchdown run making it a 33-20 lead at the break.
Then in the second half, it was all Eagles as Felmlee left right off from where he started in the first half, scoring a 19 yard touchdown run and then Bratton scored the extra point making it 40-20.
It was so nice they decided to do it twice as again Felmlee scored this time with a 50 yard run and again, Bratton scored the extra point to extend the lead to 47-20.
The final score of the game was a defensive touchdown which was scored by Josie Sunderland who recovered a fumble in the endzone. Hess then scored the extra point to make it 54-20.
The Eagles then got another fumble recovery which was by Ryan Seedes Jr before running out the clock and ending the game.
Decatur will look to rebound on Sunday as they will hit the road and play against the Terrace Tigers at 3 p.m.
McVeytown will look to keep the winning ways going as the Eagles will host the Kish Indians on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Good Luck to both teams!
