Varner: We are in Late Summer Limbo and I hate it!
Jul 29, 2025

By Kenny Varner

Ok time to just get back to work.

Late July is my least favorite part of the summer.

All the All-Star games, baseball, softball games are over.

None of the fall sports have started from the Pee-Wee divisions to High school and even into the college level.

Sure Major League Baseball is in session but over the years my feelings about the sport has been at best as the young kids say “Meh!”

Rich teams picking and paying for the division dominance has me as board as watching the paint dry on a building on a hot summer’s day.

Speaking of painting, another thing about down time is having the time to do things off a “Honey do list” that I’d been able to escape during the rest of the year.

Every time I sit down on the couch I get a side-eyed look from my wife that makes me know that my time on the couch will not be a long one.

I do admit the s time of the year I get to see my entire family and can just be a husband, dad and pappy. So, I can’t complain on that part of it.

But I also find myself trying to find things to follow and get into.

Even Hollywood this year isn’t helping as the best movie out currently is the Fantastic Four, which I don’t think looks very interesting.

It has been able for me to get into my  office and work on connecting my electronics.

I make sure I keep the door close so my wife doesn’t walk past and glares with the side-eyed look and makes me wonder what else needs be done before I get started.

For sports die hards it’s like being caught in limbo. We all wait in expectations hoping to have as much excitement as we did in the previous year. It just doesn’t come soon enough. It’s a slow crawl and it’s running at a snails pace.

To me it reminds me of my time in the Air Force Basic Training. It calender-wise seems quick but once you’re in it, it drags! That’s the feeling I get every time our last sports team exits their playoff runs.

Even the national sports scene, ESPN, Fox, Etc. are so bored they are rehashing the same items they have been complaining about since the end of the NFL season.

I mean how many times can we hear about Aaron Rogers and how bad the Steelers are going to be. We have also heard so many times about Michah Parsons, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys soap opera.

I think after the 20th time we know that he hasn’t signed.

I have a message to them, please stop giving us daily lists of who is the best quarterback in the league. We know and please no more debates about how Jalen Hurts is not a top 5 quarterback and how his coach Nick Sirianni.

Also a personal note to Chris Canty, their resident Super Bowl Champion and host on the show, please don’t get so riled up about everything. I know you’re passionate about what you talk about but Dude! You’re going to give yourself a stroke if you don’t pick and choose when to go off.

When they are really desperate they go back to complaining about Chicago Bears’ quarterback Kaleb Williams. My God give the kid a break.

If I had a nickel for every time the ESPN morning show Unsportsmanlike talks about these subjects I’d be freaking rich.

However, even with these little minor issues I have, I love the show!!

I’ll still keep listening on a daily basis.

But I guess drama and sports theatrics is what’s hot right now.

Definitely it’s not for me.

So though I don’t want to wish time to go by fast, I want the sports calendar to turn and get started.

Do it before my wife finds the list that she had for me, which I hid.

Don’t tell her but she won’t find it until I’m back to work.

Naah! She’s great but I have one thing to say is …….Come back sports!!!! I miss you!!
