One of State High’s most prolific programs, the boys golf team, is gearing up for another run at the state championship in 2025. The Little Lions have won seven consecutive district titles and four straight regional titles, most recently capturing the state championship in 2021.

The team has improved by one spot each season since its fifth-place finish in the state championships in 2022, taking fourth in 2023 and third in 2024. Last season, the Little Lions went 29-1 in Mid Penn Conference play and won the This year, State College has its best group of returners since 2022 and is gunning for the state title.

Junior Henry Jacobs, who is looking to be a strong contributor in Mid Penn matches, said, “We have a lot of young players coming up, rising sophomores and juniors, as well as some very veteran upperclassmen, I think we have a very good chance at taking a state title home.”

That core of returners is led by junior Luke McGraw, who was one of Pennsylvania’s top underclassmen in his first two years at State High. McGraw, the defending District VI Individual Champion, won the recent Philadelphia Junior Tour event at the Penn State Golf Courses, the site of the PIAA State Championships.

Also returning from last year’s playoff squad are senior Brady Wager and junior Jacky Sun. Both are extremely long hitters and each shot a 75 at states in 2024. Sun may have the most raw talent on the team, and Wager has already begun to take a leadership role and will be the team’s de facto captain in his senior year.

After the top three, the Little Lions have a host of players challenging for the final spots in the top five. Most notably, juniors Charlie Ladrido, Luke Ladrido and Lyle Rioux are looking to take a leap after strong sophomore campaigns. The Ladrido twins and Rioux have been performing extremely well at offseason practices, all three often hovering around even par.

Sophomore Alex Hoskins is another player who will at least serve as a quality varsity contributor, if not more. Hoskins won the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event at Toftrees, a course at which the Little Lions frequently compete, in June with scores of 73 and 78. Hoskins mentioned that he is looking to improve his driving accuracy this season, which is instrumental at courses like the host of the Distrcit VI Championships, Scotch Valley.

While the defending state champs of North Allegheny bring back four of their five states players, the Little Lions are talented up and down the roster and are well positioned to challenge for the throne.
