Shippensburg Wrestling drops dual meet to #2 Pitt-Johnstown, 46-0

SU concludes home schedule

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team wrapped up its home dual meet schedule with a loss to the No. 2-ranked Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats Tuesday inside Heiges Field House, 46-0.

Despite the scoreline, Shippensburg (9-8, 1-5 PSAC) made its presence felt by not wrestling scared or timid against a Mountain Cat lineup that featured seven nationally-ranked wrestlers.

Pitt-Johnstown (14-0, 6-0 PSAC) scored three tech fall victories, three decisions, one major decision and one fall against a group of Raider wrestlers that showed tremendous heart and toughness throughout the meet by fighting off their back and refusing to get pinned.

The Mountain Cats’ only pin was recorded by Isaiah Vance in the final match of the night at 285 pounds.

For SU, individual highlights included the long-awaited Raider debut for redshirt-sophomore Andrew Wert (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin (Army/Virginia Tech)) at 133 pounds.

Wert displayed his mat aptitude early, recording a first-period takedown and back points against UPJ foe Dajauhn Hertzog before running out of gas in a close 5-4 defeat.

Freshman Reese Polulak (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) epitomized the Raiders’ heart and toughness Tuesday, staying off his back against the offensive onslaught of No.1-ranked UPJ 149-pounder Jacob Ealy.

Prior to the match, Shippensburg head coach Seth Bloomquist was recognized for reaching 100 wins as Raider coach, a milestone he achieved Jan. 11 with a 25-24 victory over the Seton Hill Griffins.

Next up, the Raiders head to Kutztown to wrap up their dual meet schedule Friday against the Golden Bears. Wrestling is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
