SU wins six matches, five via bonus points, to topple Falcons

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team used a fast start to topple the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a Senior Night dual meet Monday evening at Heiges Field House, 28-14.

Shippensburg (7-9) received bonus point victories in the opening two weight classes, courtesy of sophomores Noah Gilgore (Ashland, Pa./North Schuylkill) and AJ Stayton (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) to take a lead which they never relinquished.

Gilgore needed just 54 seconds to stick Fairmont State (8-11) wrestler Caden Delwarte in the opener at 125 pounds, and Stayton piled up four takedowns to earn a 14-2 major decision over Jassup Spragg at 133.

Redshirt-sophomore Mike Trainor (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) kept the fireworks going with a tech fall over FSU’s Shane Hatfield at 149. Trainor slammed Hatfield onto his back for multiple near falls on his way to a 17-1 win.

Graduate Nick Delp (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) pinned Elijah Wellings-Osha at 165, and junior Trey Shoemaker (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) registered the initial takedown and held on for a 5-2 decision over Makiya Powell at 174.

The most exciting match of the night took place at 197 pounds. Sophomore Diesel Koser (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) led FSU’s Ethan Babay by just a single point, 5-4, late in the third period.

Koser fought his way out of a dangerous predicament, defending a single leg on the edge of the mat and earning a takedown with a spin around to seal the win with 12 seconds remaining. On the restart, Koser turned Babay for good measure, with the back points resulting in a 13-4 major decision.

Five of SU’s six total victories Monday came with bonus points.

Shippensburg recognized its lone senior, Connor Livingston (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley), prior to the start of the match.

Next up, the Raiders wrap up their dual meet slate at Kutztown Friday at 7 p.m.
