LEWISTOWN- Mifflin County opened its season at Donald M. Chapman lll Stadium at Kish Bank Field on Friday night against non conference opponent Central Mountain.
Both teams got out to slow starts. Mifflin County came up empty on their first drive Chase Hartung was 0-2 in passing on the opening possession.
Central Mountain opted to open the game with their power running game handing it off to Dalton McDermott. He would get seven yards on two carries. His third carry would be for a loss of yards as a swarm of Huskies would stuff him up behind the line of scrimmage.
Mifflin County got production out of their running backs in the team’s 42-0 win over the Wildcats.
“Our guys did a good job tonight. You know they tried to take away Landon Haigh. He’s one of our best guys,” said Mifflin County head coach Shane Breon. But, we have some other kids too that can play.”And you know they’re (Central Mountain) much better. They’re a much improved team and I know it was a battle there but our defense played great and they’ll get a win this season and score some points. We took advantage of of their mistakes tonight with a short field and were able to score some points and that really changed the game. There was a dog fight. Give credit to them they changed there offense and defense and they are going to win some games this season.”
Jaxon Strohecker and Brandon Kauffman would grind out the yards in the running game. Mifflin County would even get creative and hand the ball off to Jake Knable. The result would lead to a score by Knable. Mifflin County also got production from Zahir Hill he totaled five carries in the teams’ win.
The Wildcats were held to four yards in the first half thanks to good defense from Mifflin County. Adan Daubert had four sacks on the night Gavin Herrington also had a sack.
Mifflin County also got production from their receivers despite Landon Haigh being limited. Mifflin County hit the Wildcats in other different ways to a tune of two first half touchdowns from quarterback Chase Hartung to Joel Beamer and a Dodger Weaver completion that saw Weaver left wide open for a score. The Huskies upped its lead to a 28-0 advantage.
To cap off the night, the Huskies would not be satisfied. They would pick off Alex Johnson. Talon Hopple would take to back 41 yards for a pick six to seal the deal 42-0.
“Those are my first varsity touchdowns and that’s just my first time being on the field,” said Joel Beamer. “So having that moving forward I’m loose, I’m ready to go and I think I’m going to be another weapon that the defense has to look out for this year.”
Mifflin County will be back at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium next Friday to welcome in Northern York for a Mid Penn Conference showdown.
