HERSHEY – Going into Saturday, MIfflin County had just one wrestler still in it going into the final day.
Senior Peyton Kearns made a remarkable run in the three days he put his heart and soul into everything for him, his fans and his team. In match one of the fifth round of consolations he would fall to Thomas Jefferson’s Shepard Turk the only points that would come by in that match would be Turks takedown in the closing seconds of the opening period Kearns would fall.
“From High School what i learned a lot. When you win a match one-by-one you don’t look further ahead of you. You just take one match at a time and win, said Kearns. Honestly, if you lose you keep battling. When I lost in the quarterfinals I didn’t get the best draw when it comes to wrestling in Philup Rearick. I beat him in regionals. He got into the next round and wrestled a guy I wrestled at the beginning of the year and I beat him. So he got a good draw. I mean it just shows that you just have to keep wrestling back.”
When asked to Kearns about taking this success into the next level he didn’t hesitate and answered.
“ When i go to college just go one match at a time and just keep on wrestling win or lose,” added Kearns.
Kearns is coming off a season ago where he missed majority of the season with a injury and he showed what he can do as he rebounded from losses. Kearns didn’t lose much this season as he went 34-7.
After you put a full season in you always have a story to tell, so many stories it was a remarkable run and a remarkable story for Kearns.
Kearns would go on to dominate in his second match where he jumped out to an early 1-0 lead earning an escape point. Kearns would know he would have to add one because no lead is big or safe enough in a match like this.
Kearns would earn a take down. He would go onto beat Gavin Grell not once but twice at Hershey this weekend. The Huskies’ Senior and his coaches sure do have something to feel good about as they take that 1 hour thirty minutes back to Lewistown Pa knowing they have a man that placed in States.
