WINGATE- Down to the wire.
The Bald Eagle wrestling team found themselves in quite the battle Tuesday as they went up against longtime rival Penns Valley in a Laurel Highlands match up.
The match was a back-and -forth battle where each team had a lead and it would come down to the final two matches.
In the end, the Rams would muscle out a 36-34 victory over the Eagles, winning their final two matches to take the come from behind victory.
“It was a great dual meet for everybody involved and for the fans it was exciting,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Ron Guenot. “Penns Valley’s a tough team. We lost some close matches there. We didn’t win any of the toss up matches and they got some bonus points in places.”
Bald Eagle started things at 133. The Eagles Tanner Guenot dominated in his match against Regan Miller picking up the pin at the 3:50 mark.
Guenot led off the first period with a quick takedown and was able to pick up four back points before Miller would break the near fall.
Guenot took the down position to start the second period. He would work his way out of Miller’s grasp and reversed the advantage. Guenot would go up 13-0 before finding the pinning combination.
Things continued to roll right along for the Eagles at 139 pounds.
Caden Judice gave the Eagles a Major decision win over Trip Watson 14-4.
Judice was very strategic in his match against Watson, getting a quick takedown. Watson escaped only momentarily as Judice once again was able to take control and takedown Watson, going up 6-1.
Watson added a takedown in the second period en route to the 14-4 major decision.
At 145, the Eagles made a perfect three-for-three start when Dawson Lomison pinned Penns Valley’s Zack Rummel at 3:19.
Lomison was able to get Rummel down and in a pinning combination early in the first, putting Rummel on the verge of being pinned. However, Watson was able to make it to the buzzer, saving him.
But things didn’t fair much better for Rummel in the second as Lomison, from the down position, reversed the momentum and pinned Rummel, upping the lead to 16-0.
Penns Valley finally got on the scoreboard in the 152 – pound weight class when Sawyer Fetteroff posted a 13-4 major decision over Bald Eagle’s Alex Surovec.
At 160, Penns Valley got some much needed bonus points as Braden Lisowski pinned Chase Kellander by a fall at :35.
Braden Fetteroff continued the Rams winning streak at 172 as he finished with a tech fall over Brody Gardner at 19-4.
Penns Valley took the lead for the first time at 189. In the night’s most thrilling match, the Rams Robert Martin won a nail biting 11-9 decision over Kyle Watson.
Watson found himself down 11-2 late before pouring it on with two late takedown and back points, cutting it to a 13-11 contest before running out of time.
Bald Eagle’s bounced back at 215. Caleb Close pinned Landen Hess to give his team back the lead at 22-18.
In the heavyweight class of 285, Gage Gardner pinned Ty Steiger in a first period fall at 1:05.
Gardner wasted little time getting down to buisness, picking up a takedown and then rolling Steiger up for the pinning combination, making it a 28-18 Eagles lead.
The forfeits started to fall at 107 when Bald Eagle’s Tyler Corey won by forfeit.
Penns Valley followed with a forfeit win of their own at 114 as Max Dinges had his hands raised for the win.
The momentum continued to be in the Rams corner at 121. Conner Myers pinned Bald Eagles’ Liam Purcell by fall at 3:46.
With the Rams trailing late heading into the final match at 127, Erik Carlisle gave his team the victory as he won by forfeit, winning 36-34.
At the end of the match, the two wrestlers from each team were awarded the Chris Gilliam Award. The award was given to the best two wrestlers of the match. Winning was Penns Valley’s Sawyer Fetterhoff and Bald Eagles Dawson Lomison.
