SPRING MILLS – With 17:21 left in regulation. Penns Valley looked to end the scoreless tie they were in with visiting Bald Eagle Area when the Rams’ Nicholas Limbaugh stepped in for a crucial penalty kick.
Bald Eagle goalie Henry Bacon and Limbaugh both stood looking at each other to calculate the next one’s move.
Limbaugh sent a blast that just squeezed in between Bacon and the net for the lone goal of the contest and the eventual game winning shot.
With the penalty kick, the Rams took the hard fought contest, 1-0.
From the first whistle to the final buzzer, both team’s shined on defense.
For the second game in-a-row, Penns Valley goalie Owen Robb was tough under pressure as he and his back-line managed to turn back everything the Eagles could throw at them and then some.
Despite the penalty kick, the same was to be said for Bacon and his defensive backfield as each took turns keeping the Rams just as frustrated in the contest.
“They hustled their tails off,” said Bald Eagle coach Jason Bair. “I had a ninth grader get a little over aggressive in the box when he was subbing for one of my starters that got hurt. He went in, but that ninth grader had been playing awesome all year so it was a mistake and we are going to learn from it.
Offensively, the Rams were led by the high tempo runs by Tyler Mast and Josh Conklin. Both led numerous runs up the field and numerous chances at trying to find a crack in the Bald Eagle armor.
For the Eagles, the offensive effort was led by Connor Maney. Maney pushed his offense up the field putting his team in numerous attempts for a final touch.
Penns Valley led in shots on goals by a 19-10 margin and held the advantage in corner opportunities by a 2-0 mark.
Bacon finished with 10 saves while Penns Valley counterpart Robb snatched three in the win.
As time was running out in the second, the field started to turn into the Eagles advantage pushing the ball down into the Rams back-third.
But like it did for the entire game, the Eagles were kept in check by the Penns Valley defensive crew.
“Our team, the last 20 minutes of the half poured it on. We just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net,” said Bair. “It was not PV dominant at that point. We came in with a good scheme. Things didn’t fall our way tonight. The team is playing where we need them to be. So I’m proud of them.”
