Penn State avoids upset against Bowling Green with second half comeback

UNIVERSITY PARK –

The Penn State Nittany Lions Welcomed in the Bowling Green from the Mid American Conference for a Big Ten versus Mid American Conference showdown at Beaver Stadium in the Nittany Lions home opener.

After a back-and-forth contest early, the Nittany Lions took home the 34-27 victory.

The Falcons opened their first drive scoring in just six plays in 75 total yards.


Falcons quarterback Connor Bazelak connected on passes to Harold Jr Fannin and Malcolm Jr Johnson. Bowling Green would find the endzone to take a 7-0 advantage over the Nittany Lions on a six-yard score from Fannin Jr with 12:39 to go in the opening quarter.

Penn State would match scores with the Falcons. The Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar would take it in himself for five yards to knot things up at seven.

The Falcons would not be denied an empty possession. Bowling Green would drive down the field again after poor defense from the Nittany Lions.

Bowling Green would call on Jackson Kleather for a 33-yard field goal to give the Falcons the lead 10-7 with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Falcons would burn 5:24 off the clock to set up the 33-yard boot from Kleather the Falcons would lead 10-7 after one quarter of play. Penn State would come up empty again Allar would find Omari Evans cutting into midfield. Evans would drop the ball setting up a fourth down and another empty possession for the Nittany Lions.


The Falcons would take advantage of the poor drive from Penn State to extend the lead over the Nittany Lions in the second quarter. Bazelak would find Johnson in the corner of the endzone to extend the lead to 17-7 despite being pressure by Dani Dennis Sutton.

Bowling Green would still find a way to get it in one of their best recievers hands for the score.

Penn State would again trail with 12:48 remaining in the half.


The Falcons would lead at halftime 24-20 in a half that the Nittany Lions really struggled against a good Bowling Green team that played really well in the first two quarters.

The Nittany Lions had big plays from Tyler Warren who helped spark the offense running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen put up favorable numbers Singleton rushed for 70 yards while Allen totaled 43 yards.

Penn State would open the second half with the ball quarterback Beau Pribula entered the game in the third quarter coming out of the half where the Nittany Lions knew they needed to get something going.

The Nittany Lions would call on Prebula to use his legs in what hes the best at the taking it himself for a quarteback run..

The Penn State running game was in force when Allen would run the ball twice.

Penn State’s Allar would go through the air to Allen.  The initial call on the field would be called a catch the call would be overturned the an incomplete pass.

The Nittany Lions would try again but would have no luck. Allar would scramble around but run into trouble. Chace Davis would sack Allar to bring up fourth down with 10:31 remaining in the third quarter.

The Falcons would be held scoreless the rest of the way in the game against Penn State. The defensive effort in the second half improved from Penn State.

The Nittany Lions field general Allar would connect on a pass to Singleton.  Singleton would have two touchdowns in the second half he would score from 14 yards out in the third quarter with 6:13 to go in the third.

Bowling Green would try to strike back on a productive drive. Penn State lineback Tony Rojas would have other ideas Rojas would pick off Bazelak.

Penn State fan favorite Singleton would score on a one-play 41-yard rushing touchdown that play would be the deciding factor on how the game would end.

The Falcons would knock through a 42-yard field goal Bowling Green then would attempt an onside kick Kobe King would fall on it to seal the deal .

The No 8 ranked Nittany Lions would slide past the Falcons in tight and well played game from Bowling Green the Falcons fall to Penn State 34-27.

Penn State will have a bye week.

Bowling Green will settle and pick up things after a bye week to play Texas A&M at Kyle Field on September 21.
