ALTOONA – The Mifflin County wrestling team had great performances all around Saturday at the District 6 Class AA meet in Altoona.
Avery Aurand,Andrew Alexander,Peyton Kearns all brought home gold for the Purple and White.
Mifflin County had talent this year up and down the lineup showing great depth and looked pretty strong coming into districts.
“I’m very proud of every kid that wrestled today This is you know that start of postseason and we I was working on our kids to be able to wrestle with a little bit more confidence and wrestle in a way that their nerves aren’t allowing them to be and not be so tense,” Huskies coach Kirby Martin. “So those are the things we’re kind of working on right now. It was definitely a mixed bag of results. You know it was awesome for Andrew and Avery and Peyton to be champions and to be dominant. That’s good moving forward. For everybody else. as I try to keep telling our team like every time you get to compete you are learning something about yourself and so we took some losses today which means you know we got to continue to work on our technique and just maybe our mental strength.”
Mifflin County started out on fire Alexander didn’t waste any time following his bye he wouldn’t look back he would go the whole way to find gold.
“I think I did pretty good on my turns,” said Andrew Alexander. I got to keep on them and I would like to get some more takedowns but my turns were actually good tonight.”
Alexander got a tech fall win 15-0 over his first opponent he would win by a major decision in the championship round.
Mifflin County’s Jake Knable had a solid day of work on the mat so did Alonso Torres Paxton Shawver, Layton Bowersox,Kamden Everly Colby Selier it was a whole team effort.
“I’m just grateful for these opportunities to compete, said Avery Aurand. I’m grateful lthat i got to get the win today and get some big wins like a major decision. That’s something I’m just really grateful for and I’m looking forward to regionals in two weeks.”
Peyton Kearns continued his elite season as he heads into the Western Regionals as the newly crowned D6 Champion at 285.
“Just going to take it one match at a time,” said Peyton Kearns. I knew the kids I was wrestling so I just took my matches one by one. I was very confident you know so I’m just going to keep that confidence level high. You don’t want to get to high obviously and get over your head but I went in knowing I was able to be on top and to be a district champ so moving on from here and I’m going to keep on winning.
MIfflin County travels to the Western Regionals in two weeks looking to have some grapplers looking to punch their ticket for Hershey by qualifying for states.
