MCVEYTOWN – McVeytown completed the three game sweep, but Burnham made them earn every single cent of it as it took two overtimes, but again, the Eagles were able to win over the Bulldogs 25-19 in a CKFL Midgets football game Sunday afternoon.
The rain certainly played a factor throughout the game especially during the first half as only on touchdown was scored. And it was during the first quarter as Bentley Felmlee burst through the gap and sailed down the field for 57 yards for the score. Colt Bratton made the extra point to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs did have an opportunity late in the second quarter to score, but was quickly stopped by Josie Sunderland who got the sack to leave the score at 7-0 at the break.
But Burnham continued to battle as late into the third quarter, the Bulldogs got some help from brotherly love as the Galbraith twins connected as Eli found his brother Malachi with a 12 yard pass for the touchdown. Eli then scored the extra point to even the game at seven apiece.
The fourth quarter was when things got real intense, starting with a another big run from Felmlee who went 16 yards for the score, but failed on the two point attempt making it a 13-7 game.
But with just over a minute left in regulation, Burnham evened the score with a two yard touchdown run courtesy of Brandon Davis. But the Bulldogs also failed on an extra point making it 13 all.
Blake Specht was able to force overtime for McVeytown as he jumped up and got an interception.
In the first overtime, Felmlee scored a 10 yard run, but Burnham hung in there tough and stopped the extra point attempt leaving the score at 19-13.
Then the Bulldogs took their turn and the Galbraith twins struck again as Eli launched a deep ball to brother Malachi for 11 yards. But this time, it was the McVeytown defense who got the stop and forced a second overtime.
The Eagles’ defense came out up huge as on fourth down, they managed to get the stop at the one yard line leaving the score at 19-19.
McVeytown then found itself at the one yard line on fourth down, but this time, the Eagles capitalized as Felmlee powered his way into the endzone and get the win for McVeytown.
McVeytown will hit the road on Tuesday as the Eagles will compete against the Terrace Tigers at 5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile the Burnham Bulldogs will host the Derry-Decatur Cyclones next Sunday with a start time of 3 p.m.
Great game by both teams!
And best of luck!
