ALTOONA – The MIfflin County 14Us opened their Mid-Atlantic Sectional play Friday for the chance to pinch their ticket to a National Championship appearance.

Their first day of play is a busy one, playing a double dip to start the tournament play in Altoona.

Mifflin County’s first opponent Broomall Newtown is no stranger to the Blue-and-White. Coming in, Broomall had been a perfect 6-0.

In the end, Newtown was too much for MIfflin County defeating them 9-1.

The game was closer than the scoreboard displayed as MIfflin County was still in the game until late in the contest.

Broomall Newtown exploded for five runs in the sixth and held to allow just a lone run in the seventh for MC.

Mifflin County finished with only four hits.

Picking up hits for MIfflin County were Colton Aumiller, Bo Benny, Derek Wert and Lucas Shawver.

Shawver picked up the lone RBI on the night for MC.

Pitcher Brady Doyle picked up the win for Broomall Newtown.

After two scoreless innings to start the game Broomall Newton opened the scoring posting one in the third.

Zach Marro singled and later scored on a line drive screamer into centerfield by Carter Patterson making it a 1-0 contest.

Offensively, Newtown was at again in the fourth. This time, the crew rallied for two more.

Chase Magee got the fourth going with a walk. He later walked home with the bases loaded.

Still with the bases loaded, Marro walked home Aidan Matthews, upping the score to a 3-0 advantage.

Things continued to work well for Broomall as they scored another run in the fifth and then five runs in the sixth.

Mifflin County refused to be shut out, putting up a run in their last at bats.

Benny got things going with a strong blast into center.

Benny was forced out at second on a fielders’ choice by teammate Jude Zook.

Wert advanced Zook to third on a double, putting runners on second and third.

Zook later scored on a fielders choice by Shawver.

Mifflin County is back in action again tonight at 7:00 in the night contest against the Caldwell Chiefs.
