SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men’s outdoor track & field team added several season bests on Saturday at the 18th Annual Paul Kaiser Classic, delivering a number of solid performances on what turned out to be a pleasant day for competition after a damp morning at Seth Grove Stadium.

In the throws, Pat Maloney (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) crushed his personal best in the discus by nearly seven feet with a fantastic new top mark of 179 feet, 11 inches – a provisional qualifier that moves him back atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaderboard and all the way up to fourth on the national leaderboard.

Josh Herbster (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each delivered another signature performance in the hammer, finishing just four inches shy of his personal best that is currently ranked eighth in the nation. Herbster’s victorious throw Saturday traveled 201 feet, 3 inches, and marks the third meet out of the last four in which he has thrown the hammer at least 200 feet.

It was part of a strong day in the field for the Raiders, as Kenny Rhyne (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) cleared 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump, and Mo Whittle (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) landed a triple jump of 46 feet, 6 ¾ inches that moved him onto the Top 5 of the league leaderboard.

Track highlights included Chase Hensinger (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) delivering an 800-meter best of 1:53.77 and Quinton Townsend (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) fashioning a 400-meter best of 49.35 seconds – times that rank among the Top 8 in the conference.

Cole Harris (York, Pa./Central York) and Luke Hinegardner (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) picked up conference qualifiers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by running respective times of 10:06and 10:13, while Chayce Macknair (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) picked up a conference qualifier in the 10K by running 33:19.

Shippensburg will send a contingent next Friday to compete at Penn State’s Jim Thorpe Open. The PSAC Championships take place in two weeks at Slippery Rock.
