Mifflin County 13, Altoona 3 (5 innings)

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County refused to allow Altoona to come in and ruin its senior night as the Huskies came out on top 13-3 in five innings on Wednesday.

Prior to the game the Huskies honored their seven seniors in Reagan Shafranich, Morgan Diven, Lorraine Miner, Madison Wolfgang, Julianna Hartzler, Mackenna Yoder and Sophie McCurdy.

But it wasn’t just the Mifflin County seniors that were honored. As a sign of good sportsmanship, the Huskies showed appreciation to the three Altoona seniors in Olivia Kelley, Gracie Wilt and Grace Glasgow.

Mifflin County had new hurler on the mound in Piper Specht. Specht made her debut a successful one posting a five hitter while going the distance while striking out three.

It did not take long for Mifflin County to get on the scoreboard as in the bottom of the first inning. Arika Henry laced a double to left center field that scored Riley Hine.

Henry later moved to third on a wild pitch before senior McCurdy grounded out to third but drove Henry home.

But Altoona answered in the top half of the second with a run of its own as Kaya Sprankle singled to right that scored Haley Wible that cut the lead down to 2-1.

The Huskies responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as McCurdy hit a sacrifice fly to left that brought home fellow senior Hartzler that made it 3-1.

The Mifflin County bats came through in a big way in the bottom of the third innings where the Huskies dropped five runs in the frame.

Mifflin County kept it going and added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. But Altoona was not going away quietly as the Mountain Lions tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 10-3 ballgame.

The Huskies didn’t let it stop their bats from staying hot as in the bottom half of the fifth. The bases were loaded and Shafranich stepped up to the plate and blasted one to right center for bases clearing double to walk off the game in five innings.

Overall the Huskies scored 13 runs off of 12 hits.

Shafranich led with a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and four runs batted in.

Fellow senior Miner went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Mifflin County (8-5) travels to face Chambersburg on Monday at 4:15 p.m.
