MIFFLINTOWN – Making a statement!
The Juniata Indians football team honored local veterans in a big way Friday as the team celebrated Military night on and off the field.
Off the field, the team gave a big salute to the local veterans giving them free admission while on the field they gave them quite a show topping Newport 36-0.
Leading the charge offensively was running back Seth Laub who rushed for a team high 89 yards rushing. Quarterback Aaron Kanagy also shined bright going 6-12 124 and 2TDs in the win.
The Indians offense rushed for 375 total yards of offense.
Juniata wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard posting 23 points in the first quarter.
Laub got things rolling as he capped off a Juniata scoring drive hooking up with Kanagy on a 9- yard TD pass reception at 7:59. After the Brant Walters PAT, Juniata led 7-0.
Minutes later, the defense got into the action as it forced the Buffaloes’ punter to run out of his own end zone for a safety.
With time running out in the first,
Caleb Smith notched his first touchdown muscling out a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:58 left.
However, the Juniata offense would get one last shot of scoring in the first and did just that.
On the last play of the first Jasper Shepps caught a 29-yard pass from Aaron Kanagy in the end zone to take the 23-0 lead going into the second.
The Juniata defense dominated the line of scrimmage and left Newport frustrated.
Juniata would score one last time before the half on a Waylon Ehrenzeller 15-yard run, giving the home team a dominating 30-0 halftime lead.
Rounding out the game scoring in the third was Ehrenzeller again. This time he busted his way through the line on a 3-yard run, putting the game into the “Mercy Rule”.
From there, the Indians continued to keep Newport off the board and finishing with a shut out, sending fans and veterans home happy.
With win, the Indians improve to 2-2.
