LEWISTOWN – The 1-1 Mifflin County Huskies hosted 2-0 Mechanicsburg at Mitchell Field Friday night for the first time this season after starting their season on the road for two straight games.
It was youth football night and all the youth football teams were honored before tonight’s game.
“We gotta regroup. I knew it was going to be a tough opponent. They are well coached,” Coach Shane Breon said. They have some experience. The guys over there they have tremendous athletes over there. Their line gave us problems on both sides of the ball.”
“They are going to go far they are going to go to the playoffs and they are going to push for a championship. We gotta regroup. We’re familiar with Hershey and they are familiar with us so we will gameplan for it and be ready for it.”
Mifflin County won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Mechanicsburg received to open the game.
The Wildcats came up empty in their first drive going three and out.
Mifflin County would come up empty on its first drive to begin the game.
Mechanicsburg would finally start to get going in drive two despite a deflected pass from Avery Aurand. Eli Reider would step back and find his top target Josh Smith for the first score of the game on a 38-yard pass.
Mifflin County failed to get anything going when it came to putting points on the board.
The Huskies came close to scoring a few times the Wildcats defense stood strong and held their ground.
Despite the lack of scoring, Fletcher Wilson found his targets a few times in the game connecting on passes to Joel Beamer and Landon Haigh. Cyrell Green saw his targets limited. The Wildcats defense kept Green and so much of the offense in check.
Mifflin County was weak up front the offensive line failed to block causing Wilson to be under pressure a lot. Willie Marshall Travis had a big game getting to the quarterback on several occasions. Colin Stare and Patrick Cone got to the quarterback as well.Mifflin County did record the first sack of the season. Adan Daubert got to Reider to bring him down for the sack.
Huskies defensive lineman Hunter Tipton recorded a tackle for a loss Gavin Herrington earned a tackle for a loss to continue to rack up them tackles.
Chase Hartung would enter the game in the third quarter. He would move the team down the field quickly but the drive would stall out. Hartung would find his intended target resulting in a turnover on downs the Wildcats would stop the Huskies short of the line to gain.
Hartung also got picked off by Talan Verdelli taking it back for a pick six.
The Wildcats proved to be too much for the Huskies falling to defeat 40-6 in front of the home crowd for the first home game.
Mifflin County will travel to Hershey next Friday. Mechanicsburg will face Lower Dauphin at home next Friday.
