SU’s 16 points are tied for the most scored against the Golden Bears since 2011

The Shippensburg University wrestling team saw four of its wrestlers post exciting victories as the Raiders concluded their dual meet schedule with a loss to the Kutztown Bears Friday night inside Keystone Arena, 31-16.

Shippensburg (9-9, 1-6 PSAC) scored 16 points against the Golden Bears, tied for the team’s most against KU since February of 2011. Graduate Al Miscovich (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area (UPJ)), freshman Reese Polulak (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land), freshman Trey Shoemaker (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) and redshirt-junior Danny Scheib (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) were responsible for the Raider wins.

Kutztown (7-4, 3-3 PSAC) rode pins from 133-pounder KJ Fenstermacher and nationally ranked 184-pound wrestler Matt Weinberg, as well as decisions from Dalton Gimbor (165) and Ethan Baney (174).

Miscovich kick-started the Shippensburg highlight reel with a takedown of KU’s Trent Thompson in sudden victory, picking up a 10-8 decision in their match-up at 141 pounds.

In the next match, Polulak authored one of the biggest highlights of the Raiders’ regular season.

The Ship 149-pound wrestler was perilously close to dropping his bout with Kutztown’s Brenden Smay after he was slammed onto his back late in the opening period. But just as quickly as he found himself on his back, Polulak reversed the hold and planted Smay’s shoulders the mat for a thrilling pin.

Shoemaker found himself in a close matchup with KU 197-pounder Tyler Fisher until the final two minutes. Down 2-1 on the scoreboard entering the final period, Shoemaker used his trademark Peterson roll from the bottom position to score a reversal and back points. He rode out his opponent for the rest of the match to finish off a 6-2 win.

Lastly, redshirt-junior Danny Scheib utilized a bear hug to score the initial takedown against fellow heavyweight Dustin Swanson enroute to a 10-2 major decision.

The Raiders will now begin preparations for the NCAA Super Region I Championship Tournament, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 25 at East Stroudsburg University. Wrestling from ESU is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
