BELLEFONTE – Turning the corner. After a slow start to the season, the Bellefonte softball team has been starting to peak at the right time as the regular season gets close to ending.
Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Raiders exploded onto the scene with four runs in the first en route to a strong victory over Huntingdon 10-0 in five innings.
“These girls are definitely playing at their best,” said Bellefonte coach Meranda Poorman. “It was nice to see when we were up the high that we rotate and get everybody in.”
Grace Novitsky opened things up in the bottom of the fist blasting a 3-run triple and then scoring on an error to the plate by the Bearcats, making it a 4-0 contest.
After sending down Huntingdon in order, the Red Raiders were back at it in the second.
Sienna Barnhart reached on an error but was out when teammate Haley Rimmey bounced into a fielders choice.
With Rimmey on first, Melius blasted a shot over the right fielders head for an RBI triple scoring Rimmey.
Carly Clarkson helped her own cause as she hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Melius to score for the second time in the young contest, upping the Bellefonte advantage to 5-0.
Clarkson was clutch on the mound, sending down the Bearcats down in order in third as well.
Offensively, Bellefonte picked up where they left off in the second.
With one out, Novitsky singled.
She would score on a double to left by Kierra Narehood.
Facing two outs in the inning, Rimmy walked, setting up things for the Melius and the Lady Raiders. Melius hit a soft pop that landed in between first and right field, scoring Narehood and increasing the Bellefonte lead to 8-0 going into the fourth.
Both defenses kept their opponents off the board heading into the fifth.
Bellefonte went to its bullpen in the fifth, Jocelyn Nau came into relieve Clarkson who was tossing a two-hit shut out.
Barnhart ended the contest in fine fashion blasting a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, picking up the win on a 10-run rule.
