BELLEFONTE – Bellefonte found themselves in another tough battle on the volleyball court Tuesday hosting a scrappy Huntingdon squad that came in with a record of 2-0.
Despite falling short in the contest 3-1, the Lady Raiders brought a spirited effort in a (25-22, 23-25,13-25,19-25) contest.
“I am proud that they never give up. We play all the way to the last point,” said Bellefonte coach Monica Smith. “I think we hurt ourselves tonight. We had too many errors on all end of the court, serving and hitting. We have to keep the ball inbounds.”
Colbie Frailey finished with four service points, nine kills and 33 assists for the Lady Raiders.
Teammate Keira Clarkson tallied four service points, six kills and 28 assists.
Taryn Miller rounded out the Bellefonte floor leaders on the night with four service points, four kills and 19 assists.
The Red Raiders got off to a strong start, taking the 25-22 victory.
Both teams opened the series with a back-and-forth battle throughout.
The biggest lead of the first match was Bellefonte as they held an 18-14 advantage.
With the game tied at 12, Bellefonte rolled off three consecutive points via Ella Novitsky on the service line.
Despite the closeness of the contest, the Red Raiders never gave up the lead from there en route to the 25-22 victory.
Bellefonte dropped a nail biter in the second game, falling 25-23 in a hard fought contest that proved to be even closer than the opening contest.
In the third game, Bellefonte battled throughout.
Despite being down 18-9, the Lady Raiders roared back, cutting the contest to as close as 19-15 thanks a scoring run by and Ella Novitsky (3).
However, Bellefonte ran out of time as the Bearcats outlasted the scrappy Red Raiders 25-19.
Tied at 1-1, the Red Raiders got off to a positive start on two Sadie Ripka service points.
Huntingdon battled back to tie as they picked up a side out point and a service point by Faith Brindle.
The home team went back ahead thanks to a side out as well and Frailey service point.
Things remained close until the match was tied at seven.
Bellefonte got a 4-point surge, highlighted by a 3-point barrage by Clarkson. Clarkson nailed two consecutive aces in the scoring run.
But the Bearcats started to take the momentum.
Trailing 12-9, the Bearcats battled back to pull within one at 13-12.
Huntingdon put the ball in the hands of Brindle. Brindle was scorching from the service line, helping her team go on a 14-point run, putting her team in charge as they rolled to a 25-13 victory.
In JV action, Bellefonte lost a heartbreaker in three games.
