ALTOONA – Tuesday night, the Bellefonte and Hollidaysburg girls’ soccer team found themselves in a thrilling defensive contest.
An early Tigers goal by Allie Hayer proved to be the game winner as Hollidaysburg captured the 2024 District 6 Class AAA championship.
“I said to the girls 1-0 you can’t hang your head. It’s as close as you can get, right,” said Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller. “I thought they came out and played a fantastic second half and we were pressuring on our side of the field we just couldn’t find the back of the net tonight.”
In the first half, both teams started with strong runs as each of the teams were trying to gained the momentum.
The back-and-forth play would continue until the 25-minute mark.
Hayer found the opening and the shot she wanted as was able to get the ball past Rory Pelipesky.
That would be the last one that would get past Pelipesky as she finished with a game-high eight saves.
The Tigers outshot the Lady Raiders 13-8 while they lead in corners as well 12-2.
Bellefonte got strong contributions from the back-line members Peyten Stall, Madyson Miller, Xiomara Stiles, Piper Breon and Addalyn DeWeese.
Despite some strong runs by both teams the score remained 1-0 as the two teams went into the intermission.
Bellefonte came out with a spark in the second half as they were able to get to shots by Sydney Miller and one by Madyson Miller. But neither could find a hole in the Tigers defense to put a go in or get a good luck at the environment.
Despite numerous tries at the goal, the Lady Raiders weren’t able to complete the comeback.
“We battled injuries. We battled a lot of sickness this season. Thats one of the things I told them in the huddle,” said Miller. “They persevered this season and they worked really hard to keep pushing through all those obstacles and I’m really proud of them.”
