WINGATE – It’s was a renewal of a legendary rivalry Tuesday when two old foes from the now defunct Mountain League took to the softball diamond.
Bald Eagle Area (3-1)welcomed the resurgent Philipsburg-Osceola team (4-2) who was looking to reignite a rivalry that in recent years has been finishing in the Bald Eagle side of things.
When the dust settled on this edition of the rivalry it would be the veteran squad of Bald Eagle posting a 13-3 six inning victory.
“Our last game against Huntingdon our bats didn’t show up we just didn’t square up on anything. Tonight she (Alivia Bizzari) she’s tough too but we squared up and did a lot better on two strikes where against Huntington we had seven called third strikes,” said Bald Eagle coach Don Lucas. “But we are practicing really hard on that part of our game.”
Picking up the win was Sierra Albright who went the distance striking out nine and scattering six hits in the sixth adding inning contest.
Early on, the Lady Mounties jumped on the scoreboard first, playing a run in the first inning.
Emily Gutskey reached on a walk. She then proceeded to steal second and reached third on a wild pitch.
Morgan Vaughn roped a screamer just down the line at third, scoring Gutskey.
Philipsburg pitcher kept the Eagles bats silent in the first and second but in the third, the Bald Eagle bats came alive.
Albright helped her own cause hitting a slow roller in between first and second. She was replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Hailey Simpson.
Veteran batter Taylor Habovick put down a picture perfect bunt single, putting runners on first and second. The Eagles were 3-for-3 in bunt attempts.
Lead off hitter Kailey Eckert loaded the bases as she smashed a single into shallow left centerfield.
Left fielder Sydney Thompson walked in Simpson tying the game.
Bald Eagle took the lead when Addyson Burns blasted a 2RBI single scoring Habovick and Eckert. Thompson and Burns later scored on a 2RBI single by Alexa Baney.
Bald Eagle added another run in the fourth, upping its lead to a 6-1 lead.
But the Lady Mounties refused to go away quietly posting two runs in the fifth.
Gustkey led things off in the fifth with a 2-out single to left. Teammate Morgan Vaughn provided some two-out lightning punching another single.
Bizzari emptied the bases of Gustkey and Vaughn blasting a shot that one-hopped the right centerfield fence, cutting the Eagles lead in half at 6-3.
Bizzari and company set down the Eagles in the sixth with just a lone hit and no runs.
In the top of the sixth, with one out, Adi Jarrett hit the ball to deep centerfield but appeared to be caught for the out. But the catch was overturned and allowed Jarrett to stay at second with a double.
Butterworth that didn’t deter the Eagles as Albright took things into her own hands striking out the next to batters, putting her at nine going into the final stanza.
Offensively, the Eagles once again came alive in the sixth adding some insurance runs.
Gabbie Perry led off with a walk. Eckert placed a second bunt single. A wild pitch moved them up a base setting the stage for Maelee Yoder. Yoder blasted a shot into center landing her with a 2RBI double, upping the lead to 9-3 advantage.
But the Lady Eagles weren’t done yet, rallying for a 7-run inning extending the lead to 13-3, ending the game.
