MOUNT UNION – The Trojans took advantage of their opportunities in their 49-21 victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide in ICC football action this past Friday night.
The Golden Tide made their presence felt for the majority of the opening quarter though marching the ball down the field taking much of the clock down before eventually scoring on a three yard run by Lincoln Hoyt and then an extra point by Mason Lash to make it a 7-6 lead.
But it did not take Mount Union very long to respond as it only took a couple minutes for the Trojans to score on their opening drive thanks to Nasir Collins who went 17 yards to score. However, the extra point failed leaving it 7-6.
That didn’t seem to bother Mount Union, as Caizon Scott received a punt and found open space and hustled his way down the sideline for 66 yards to score.
Going into the second quarter with the score at 13-7, Curwensville was able to take back the lead thanks to a two yard touchdown run from Reed Hawkins.
Mount Union wasn’t going away quietly as with 12 seconds remaining in the opening half, quarterback Maddox Hobbs launched a missile to Scott, only for the ball to bounce off his hats. Luckily though for the Trojans, Brayden Richards was literally right behind him and managed to grab the ball and ran all the way down for an 80 yards touchdown pass to give Mount Union  a 20-14 lead at the break.
From there on, it was all Mount Union as the third quarter became the Micah Atherton show. Atherton scored both of his touchdowns in the game during this period with the first one going 13 yards and the second one which went for 21 yards.
Then in the fourth quarter. Collins took his turn and went 47 yards for a touchdown and then went 53 yards for another touchdown.
But, the Golden Tide continued to battle and scored the final touchdown of the game with a six yard run by Tuck Tkacik.
Another big reason as to why Mount Union controlled the second half was the tough defensive play. In fact, the Trojans held Curwensville to a total offense of 82 yards for the second half. Scott also had two interceptions for the game.
Collins had 11 carries for 213 yards and three rushing touchdowns to go along with Atherton’s two.
Hobbs also went a perfect two for two for 83 yards with a touchdown.
Mount Union (2-1, 2-0) travels to face West Branch Next Friday.
Until Next Time!
