MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata Indians football team
hosted the Mifflin County Huskies for an morning scrimmage at Dietrick Field Saturday with the first scrimmage before the regular season kicks off.
Juniata is looking to build off a season last year where they finished 9-4 and 7-1 in their conference. On the other hand, Mifflin County will look to build off an 4-6 season while looking for better fortunes this season after losing standout players like Dupree Reed, Cyrell Green, Avery Aurand and others that put on a good show Friday after Friday for the home Huskies’ faithful.
Juniata lost six seniors off their own in Wyatt Ehrenzeller, Connor Boreman, Jaiver Lopez, Lane Peiper, Wyatt Dysinger and Gage Harlon.
The Indians got really good reps out of quarterback Jason Condo as he connected on a pass with Jasper Shepps. Shepps will play a major role in the teams’ receiving game this season.
Condo would help out his own cause taking it in for a score in the teams scrimmage. Meanwhile, in the running game the Indians got really good performances from Isaac Ramirez and Ty Rowles. Rowles’ brother had an excellent play on the defensive end picking off Mifflin County QB Noah Wolfkiel.
“It’s nice to get live reps you know going against a larger school like Mifflin County,” said Indians head coach Kurt Condo. “I think that’s there are tough group of kids over there. So it’s a good contest for our kids. We’ve got a lot of kids a lot of different reps.So you know there’s a lot of things that we look for in the first scrimmage, but most of all it ‘s just competition. So moving forward for next week in our first game against Selinsgrove. Hopefully we got the look that we need from everything to know and to come up with a game plan for that.”
Mifflin County’s Chase Hartung and Reese Christine split the majority of the reps. Both showed variety of good work. The “Purple and White” also used Landon Haigh alot in different schemes during the teams scrimmage. Others that made an impact include Joel Beamer, Nevin Farley and Dodger Weaver showed grit on both sides of the football in the game situational scrimmage.
Weaver set the edge making a tackle for a loss. Zahir Hill also helped out in the run game as well. He also scored an unofficial touchdown while the team was giving him reps. Dom Siennick was also good on both sides of the ball having an interception while also have a few catches. Siennick could play a major role in the Huskies defense come the regular season.
“I was happy with our effort. There’s things we need to clean up on both sides of the ball still but that’s what scrimmages are for,” said Huskies head coach Shane Breon. “And you know going against Juniata they’re always a well coached team so it’s really a great challenge. You know coming out of the gate ,you never know what you have as a team but you know one thing we do know is the kids are together and they work hard. And,you know it’s kind of been a crazy off season with moving around on different fields and stuff to practice, but his kids brought it today. We need to keep that up.And you know,we’ll be in good shape next week against Central Mountain for the home opener.”
Mifflin County will welcome Central Mountain next week at the new Kish Bank Field at Donald Chapman Stadium while Juniata welcomes in Selinsgrove at Dietrick Field.
