UNIVERSITY PARK – History in the making!
After Mother Nature cancelled the original date, the Mifflin County Huskies traveled 322 to battle with rival State College at Penn State’s legendary Beard softball field.
Making a temporary visit, the sun came out allowing the two to renew acquaintances.
Offensively, the Lady Huskies hit the ball hard but directly to their counterparts.
In the end, the Little Lions were too much for Mifflin County on this night, defeating the Huskies 10-0 in six innings.
Battling against a possible no-hit bid late in the game by State College, Ava Baker broke that up in the sixth a she hit a shot into left field for the double.
Though hitting the ball hard, the Lady Huskies finished with just two hits.
“We hit the ball hard. We need to hit the ball hard on the ground. We were hitting the ball in the air,” said Mifflin County manager Craig Weston. “ Hats off to them (State College), they made the plays tonight. There was just some little things from that game that could have made this look a little better from the scoreboard side.”
In the first, the Huskies had an early threat going after walks to lead off batters Riley Hine and Jalee Bodtorf.
But the State College defense stranded the MIfflin County runners for a scoreless top of the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the Little Lions MJ McShea blasted a shot into the gap in right field. He stayed on the base path was quick as Jess Hawbaker singled one back the middle, scoring McShea.
McShea stole second.
Addy Harpster joined her teammate on base with a walk.
Sara Mellott made it 2-0 with a single into left field scoring Hawbaker and putting runners on the corners.
The Huskies shut things down after that holding State College to two runs.
After holding the Lady Huskies in the second, the State College offense went back to work. Elizabeth Sikorski led off the inning with a single back the middle. She moved to third via a sacrifice bunt by Moriarta. Leadoff hitter Sydney Wells brought home Sikorski with a single into left, upping it to a 3-0 contest.
Wells advanced on a bunt by McShea, putting runners on the corners with one out.
Hawbaker loaded the bases as she took a walk, loading it up for McTavish.
Pietzch struck out McTavish while the defense ended the inning forcing a groundout by Addy Harpster, keeping the damage at a minimum at 3-0.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Cara Rhinehart plastered a double into left.
The Huskies defense held tight in the third allowing no runs in the stanza.
Going into the fourth, Moriarta was tossing a no-hitter.
State College added a run in the fourth, via a Huskies miscue.
Mifflin County manufactured runners in the fifth, getting runners on first and second. However, the State College defense stopped the potential rally, still holding onto a shutout and a no-hitter.
But in the sixth, Baker broke that up with a shot into left allowing her to motor around first and find her safe at second.
However, the Little Lions put an end to that contest scoring three in the sixth to take home the victory.
