MOUNT UNION – The Trojans scored big late and had a gem from Davin Yocum as they defeated the Tussey Mountain Titans by the final score of 8-0 during a ICC East baseball game Thursday afternoon.

Mount Union got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning where Abe Weirich led off the frame by reaching first thanks to a hit by pitch. Ethan Convert replaced him as a courtesy runner before stealing second.

Cody McClain then tanked a shot down the left field line for a double as well as driving in Convert to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union came back for some more in the bottom half of the fourth where the Trojans added on two more runs. Julian Weirich led off the inning with a single before back to back doubles from Yocum and Abe Weirich to make it a 3-0 ball game.

But the Trojans put the final nail in the coffin in the bottom of the sixth where they tacked on five more runs in the frame. Three of those runs came from a single by Levi Hunsinger which brought in two runs and the third run was from a single by Julian Weirich. The other two were from a bases loaded walk from Dylan Shawver and then EJ Boozel came flying into home plate thanks to a wild pitch.

Yocum went the distance for Mount Union and in his seven innings of work, he only allowed five hits and struck out two batters while walking none.

“I thought Davin (Yocum) did a great job,” Trojans coach Tim Hicks said. “He was hitting all of his pitches.”

Even when the Titans managed to get on base, the Mount Union defense quickly put a stop to their momentum as the Trojan defense had a pair of double plays as well as a great diving stop and throw to first from Shawver.

Mount Union moves to (6-2) and will hit the road today as they will compete against the Williamsburg Blue Pirates.
