The Shippensburg University wrestling team had five individual place winners Saturday at Elizabethtown’s D. Kenneth Ober Invitational and placed fifth out of 10 teams in action at the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness & Well-Being.

 

Three Raiders were the runner-up at their respective weight class: redshirt-sophomore Mike Trainor (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) at 149, graduate Nick Delp (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area (Bucknell)) at 165 and junior Owen Koch (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) at 184.

 

Junior Trey Shoemaker (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) placed third in the 174-pound bracket and sophomore Diesel Koser (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) finished fourth at 197.

 

Trainor won his first four matches of the day to reach the 149-pound final and picked up bonus points in each. He scored two major decisions, a technical fall and a pin before dropping a 6-1 decision to RIT’s Mike Glynn in the final.

 

Delp, making his season and Raider debut, scored a tech fall, a pin and a decision before dropping an 8-6 decision in the 165-pound final to Justice Hockenberry-Folk of the host Blue Jays.

 

Koch only needed two wins – both decisions – to reach the 184-pound final, where he lost by fall.

 

Shoemaker was the busiest Raider of the day, enduring six matches en route to his third-place finish. After opening with a 10-0 major decision he was sent into the consolation bracket after dropping a 9-4 decision to E-Town’s Gavin Fehr. Shoemaker won four straight to end the day, including a pin of fellow Raider Cole Lang (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and a 16-0 technical fall in a rematch with Fehr.

 

At 197, Koser scored a pin and a decision via tiebreaker before entering the consolation bracket after a 4-0 loss. He scored a 4-1 decision over Messiah’s Micah Kunkle before dropping a 5-2 decision in the third-place match.

 

Twelve of the 14 Raiders who took to the mats Saturday won at least one match. Sophomore Eli Bounds (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) went 3-2 at 149 pounds, while Lang won twice at 174.

 

Shippensburg is back in action at 7 p.m. Thursdaywhen it hosts Millersville at Heiges Field House.
