LEWISTOWN- The Mifflin County Lady Huskies welcomed in the Cedar Cliff Colts inside the Mifflin County High School Gym where a close game led to a pull away win for Cedar Cliff defeating Mifflin County 53-37.
“Bottom line to this game was it was a lesson for our girls that we have to be much tougher. The two stats that were telling in this game were our turnovers and their offensive rebounds,” said MIfflin County coach Aaron Gingrich. “Each one of those creates another free possession for Cedar Cliff, and in games that are low scoring,we cannot give a scrappy team like Cedar Cliff upwards of 40 additional possessions because its almost impossible to win when you do so. We understand and we realize we are undersized but that is no excuse to not be tougher and scrapped for defensive rebounds. “We have guards that are capable of taking care of the ball but tonight hopefully showed them that we have to work harder in practice and in the games against intense pressure like Cedar Cliff. Fortunately, they’ll have to have a short, right or wrong, they will have to have a short memory because we play an extremely aggressive and talented State College team tomorrow night.”
Cedar Cliff opened its scoring on the night when Jillian MacIntire would get a defensive steal from Mifflin County. Jayda Kanagy fouled her to send her to the line to shoot two. At the line, MacIntire would go 1-2. The Colts would lead Mifflin County 1-0.
Kanagy would give the Huskies the advantage with two points of her own, giving MIfflin County the lead 2-1.
Lyla Kaercher would handle business giving the Colts back the lead 3-2. Mifflin County would grab the lead back from a Kanagy three pointer with 4:02 to go in the first quarter.
Mifflin County would lead 9-7 after the first quarter.
Cedar Cliff was led by Kaercher as she had 19 points with seven two pointers on the night. Maddy Cavalier was a big defensive threat towards Mifflin County so was so many others Lady Colts.
Cavalier made plays on the floor all night long.
Kanagy led in scoring for the Huskies with 14 total points.
Mifflin County was right in it as the Huskies only trailed 21-18 at the half.
Mifflin County’s Payton Weaver would knock down a three pointer to only trail by one 23-22 .
But then Cedar Cliff would then go on a 10-0 run with 3:32 to go in the third quarter. Mifflin County’s Mackenzie Peachey would get fouled ending the 10-0 run.
The Huskies would get another three pointer from Kanagy making it 43-29.
Things would unravel there for Mifflin County as the Lady Colts would pull away for good earning a 53-37 road win against the Purple and White. Cedar Cliff would hold the Huskies to 11 total second half points.
