LEWISTOWN – Hey Mifflin County sports fans! Hometown Sports is back with a new one on one interview. This time I got to interview the Mifflin County Indoor Track and Field coach Tamara Sechler.
JY: How excited are you for the coming season?
TS: I am looking forward to this coming season.
JY: What is the difference between this team from last year?
TS: Our team is very young this year. Last year, the team had a significant number of seniors. Quite a few of those seniors had participated in track for more than four years, starting in the local youth program Juniata Valley Striders. This year, we are very young. This will be a year of developing our athletes, creating the base that is needed for them to reach their full potential.
JY: Who do you expect to have a big year on your team?
TS: I expect to see several of our athletes in the top ten at most meets this year. With indoor track and field, we will only have five competitions which are all invitationals. These meets are very large and provide great competition. I am confident that several of our athletes will be able to be top finishers at most of these meets: Ethan Plank in horizontal jumps, Danielle Warfel in sprints, Michael McNitt in hurdles, and Wyatt Kauffman in distance. Of course, Carter Smith is likely to continue to shine. He started his career running the 400m, last year dominated the 800m and this year intends to focus on the 1600m and 3000m races. He is truly exceptional in that he can run anything from the 200m to the 3200m with excellence.
JY: Are there any newcomers you believe will make an impact?
TS: For our newcomers, this will be a season to build their base and learn how to compete in track and field. As the season unfolds, they will figure out where their strengths lie and choose their event areas.
JY: Who do you think your toughest opponents will be this year?
TS: Indoor track and field meets are non-scoring. Therefore, we will not have any team vs. team competitions. However, when we go to meets, we will face the same teams that provide us with great competition during the spring season: State College, Chambersburg, Cumberland Valley and Altoona. We enjoy competing against them during the indoor season. It gives us more opportunities to race, jump, throw and hurdle against the best in our division.
JY: What is your main goal for you and your team this season?
TS: My main goal for our program is to build a strong sense of team as we work together to maximize our potential as individual athletes.
There you have it folks! That was my interview with Mifflin County Indoor Track Tamara Sechler. I personally would like to thank coach for taking the time to answer my questions. The Huskies will have their first meet on Saturday December 7 over at Franklin Marshall College.
Until Next Time!
