LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the second straight year, and in just their second full season of competition, the Lock Haven University women’s wrestling team is soaring into the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) National Championships this Friday (March 3) and Saturday (March 4) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Action gets underway from the Alliant Energy Powerhouse both days at 12 p.m. Friday’s second session kicks off at 5 p.m., while the championship finals begin Saturday at 8 p.m. (All times EST).
National Rankings:
In the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) team rankings the Bald Eagles picked up their highest ever ranking at No. 7.
Individually, the trio Kaelani Shufeldt, Lily Sherer, and Grace Stem are all nationally-ranked at their respective weight classes.
Shufeldt is ranked No. 5 at 109 and currently holds an impressive 24-1 record.
Sherer jumped back into the national rankings at 130 and is listed at No. 6. She is 18-4 on the season.
Stem remained at No. 2 at 143 and she’s currently 19-4 heading into the national championship event.
Northeast Regional:
At the February 18th NCWWC Region 1 Tournament, the Bald Eagles made history. Shufeldt, Sherer, and Stem all won individual titles. Madison Matta and Trinity Monaghan both booked their place in the national championships by way of second-place finishes as all five LHU wrestlers made it to their respective finals and notched their spot at this weekend’s national event.
The three champions were the first in the history of the Bald Eagles women’s wrestling program.
Year in Review:
In his first year at the helm, head coach Matt Lackey wasted no time firing the Bald Eagles to a 9-5 dual record and into the national spotlight. The Haven captured four wins over ranked opponents and with the unprecedented success in the regional tournament, the Bald Eagles are set to make even more history in the national tournament.
