LEWISTOWN – Mifflin County failed to keep pace as the Huskies ended its regular season with a 8-1 loss to the Cumberland Valley Eagles in a Mid-Penn Conference softball game on Tuesday.

The game was scoreless going into the top half of the third inning when the Eagles began to fly offensively. Maddie Martin led off the inning with a single before stealing second base. Savannah DePietress then moved Martin over with a ground out to the pitcher. Annika Shearer then singled in Martin. Later in the inning, Sydney May fired a single to left field that brought in both Shearer and Emma Morgan to make it 3-0. Kylie Bornman then grounded out to second but scored May.

Then in the top of the fourth with two outs, Cumberland Valley added on another run as DePietress flew out to right field only to have the ball drop which allowed Martin to score all the way from first to make it 5-0.

The next inning, the Eagles added on another run with a double to right center that brought home Emma Morgan which made it a 6-0 lead. Then in the top of the sixth inning, Martin scored on a wild pitch and then in the seventh inning, Lindsay George reached on an error at short which allowed May to score.

The Eagles had six hits from six different batters with Shearer, Morgan, May, Bornman, George and Martin each getting a hit in the game.

Mifflin County had opportunities through the first three innings of the game. In the bottom of the first, Payton McClure came to the plate with two outs and hammered a double to left field. However, Cumberland Valley starter, Evie Coburn managed to get out of the jam with a ground out to short.

The Huskies had another chance the next inning with runners on first and second and only one out before Coburn got the next two batters out. Then the following inning, the Huskies had the bases loaded but with two outs. But again, Mifflin County failed to bring home any run.

But the Huskies finally put the run on the board as Jalee Bodtorf smacked a single to center field that allowed Riley Hine to score.

Mifflin County had only four hits in the game with McClure, Dakota Hershberger, Sophie McCurdy and Bodtorf all had a hit in the game.

Cumberland Valley starter Coburn pitched the first four innings of the game with a strikeout and three walks. May then took over the final three innings and collected five strikeouts.

Madison Wolfgang went five innings for the Huskies and had six strikeouts and three walks. Falynn Reinhard pitched the next two innings and had one strikeout and three walks.

Mifflin County falls to (8-9) overall and will look to regroup on Thursday as the Huskies will host the Altoona Mountain Lions in the District 6 Class 6A semi-finals where the winner will meet State College in the finals.

“Just getting back at it, getting a positive attitude,” Weston said. “We need to get some momentum, early and carry that throughout the game rather than waiting until the end of the game. We need to start from first pitch and play till the last pitch.”
