Just because everyone is doing something online doesn’t mean you should. Multiple people have posted videos of them feeding their dogs chicken with hot sauce on it on TikTok. In various videos, some dogs lick the food and continue to eat it until they realize how spicy it is, while others snarl and refuse to continue to eat it. A popular TikTok creator who says she’s a veterinary technician said the trend could cause pancreatitis, or the inflammation of the pancreas, in dogs. Dr. Mary Altomare, the head veterinarian at the Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter in New Jersey, says spicy food causes “great discomfort” to the dog’s body, including to the oral cavity and esophagus. She also cautions against feeding dogs onion and garlic, both of which are toxic to animals, and can sometimes be found in hot sauces or be used to add flavor to chicken.
