Study: How To Build A Bond With Your Cat

by Erik Lane | Oct 8, 2020 | DJ Blogs, Erik | 0 comments

Cats can be tricky to bond with, but researchers from the U.K. say there are specific ways to build your bond with your kitty. The scientists say you can build a rapport with a cat by using an eye narrowing technique with them. Eye narrowing movements in cats have some parallels with genuine smiling in humans, and it was found that cats are more likely to slow blink at their owners after their owners have slow blinked at them, compared to when they don’t interact at all. Another experiment found that cats were more likely to approach someone’s outstretched hand after they’d slow blinked at the cat, compared to when they had adopted a natural expression. Researcher Professor Karen McCombs adds, “Try narrowing your eyes [at cats] as you would in a relaxed smile, followed by closing your eyes for a couple of seconds. You’ll find they respond in the same way themselves and you can start a sort of conversation.”
