Phil Spector, the producer and creator of the ‘wall of sound’ has passed away from natural causes in prison. Spector was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison in 2009 for the 2003 fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson.
Spector was one of the strangest persons in music history; yes he produced numerous hits and worked with bands such as the Ronettes, the Ramones, the Beatles, Cher and a slew of others but on the other hand he was insane. During the production of the Ramones’ “End of the Century” album, as the story goes, Spector supposedly held the band at gunpoint so that they would play their songs better. This story of course is disputed and has several different versions.
Another strange story about Spector was during his marriage to Ronnie Bennet of the Ronettes. During their marriage in the basement of their home Spector had a glass coffin similar to what Snow White laid in installed. Spector would say that this is where Ronnie would lie if “she ever tried to leave me”
On top of all the madness he was also convicted of murder in 2009 for the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson
I would not go on record to say that Spector was by any means a ‘good dude’… because he definitely was not. However what he contributed to the music industry during his prime is notable… even if he was a maniac who wore ties with his own name embroidered on them
