If you haven’t already heard the news, Eddie Van Halen passed away yesterday (October 6th) losing his 20 year battle with cancer. I’m not gonna lie to you, I’ve never been very affected by the deaths of celebrities/musicians outside of that the fact we’ll never get new music from them or feel their energy radiate off a stage at a concert… but this hits differently. When I saw the news at the gym I kid you not I went weak in the knees… and it wasn’t even leg day.

When I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8, a memory that always sticks out in my head is driving to Sea Isle City NJ, sitting in the back of my parents old beat up mini van with a pair of headphones plugged into my RCA portable cassette player listening to 1984 on repeat, I wore that tape into the ground!

Hot for teacher is hands down one of my favorite tracks off that album and one of the songs that made me want to even pick up and learn guitar in the first place. Between Eddies signature sound, his intense precise mastery of the guitar neck and the creativity of a true virtuoso even to this day I’m struck with awe every time I hear that opening guitar tap… he will be greatly missed by music lovers everywhere.

On a side note… Davide Lee Roth > The tequila guy every time!
